I’ve always been connected to music in someway. I was born into it – both my grandfather and two of my uncles were drummers. And there is where this journey has its inception. I grew up behind the drums. My first heroes in music were swedish bands Vikingarna and Thorleifs. In Vikingarna i found my first drumming idol in Anders Erikson. However, drums were not the only instrument i highly adored. As young kid I was also into accordion since I was introduced to well.-known accordion player Roland Cedermark, a man who my father grew up with.
In all respect for the accordion, drums were cooler. I played drums to records and in a garagerock band until the summer of 2006 where I took a life-changing decision to relocate to Tønsberg, Norway. I needed cash and abruptly sold my beloved kit.
Up on to this time, I started to get and interest for guitars. I borrowed my sisters acoustic nylon guitar (still got it, still use it) and started a long and tedious way to actually master to play at least two chords after each other. A few months later I bought a steel string guitar (still got it, still use it) after the departure of my drum kit.
Afraid of losing touch with music, the guitar came with me when I headed to the west. During my time in Norway, which lasted for almost 5 years, I went from recording small melodies on my old MP3-player (this was before the iPod) to banging on the big bell one day in 2008.
What I bough that day changed my life. I moved from the world of PC and bought a Macbook Pro along with a condenser mic, an audio interface, Logic 8 and the Superior 2.0 drum sampler.
From that day my old MP3-recordings were about to be shaped in to complete songs. With having absolutely no knowledge of mixing or recording, I spent the first 2 years to learn all the trades of recording and setting up music. in 2013 my dream of making my own album was coming true through my debut album “Beyond the Horizon”. And thats where I am to day.
Azzopardi is a solo project of me, Steven Persson, normally an educated graphic designer. I produce, arrange, record and play all instruments as well as handling all of the vocal parts. It’s not a touring project but a pure studio project.
My style of music is quite diverse – from acoustic, laid-back ballads to blast beating metal parts. Although, a couple of things remains a signature for me in my songwriting. That is stacking keyboards, arpeggiated guitar melodies and multi-tracked vocals.
My musical journey continues and my second album is well into the making. Stay tuned for more!
